Summer Reading: Check Out These 3 Mindfulness Books!

Whether you're lounging in a beach chair or in a cozy quiet spot at home, summertime can be the perfect time to catch up on your reading. We’re sure it’s no surprise that at Therefore I Learn, we love reading! And we love sharing our passion for books with the young people in our lives!

If you’re a parent, teacher, or caregiver, there are so many different mindfulness books to choose from that it can be difficult to know where to start. While there are so many great ones available, we’ve selected two you can share with your school-aged children this summer and one for yourself.

For the Kids:

1. Mop Rides the Waves of Life: A Story of Mindfulness and Surfing by Jaimal Yogis

This book is perfect for children ages 5-8. Yogis—an award-winning author, surfer, and dad— tells the story of Mop, a fun-loving kid with “funny” hair who faces challenges navigating school and interactions with classmates. But with the help of his mom and surfing, Mop learns how to bring mindfulness into his whole life: learning to breathe deeply, to ride the good waves, and to let the bad waves go by. While the beachy illustrations make this a beautiful picture book, the lessons are good reminders for readers of all ages.

The second book in the Mop series, Mop Rides the Waves of Change, will be released later this month (July 20, 2021).

This latest book by Wiley—an award-winning children’s music artist, author, and kids yoga & mindfulness expert—offers easy-to-follow exercises for children 3-8 to mindfully navigate their day. There are six sections dedicated to activities in daily routines—waking up, traveling, learning, playing, eating, and bedtime—to help kids learn techniques to manage their bodies, their breath, and their emotions anytime and anywhere.

This book is a companion to Wiley’s bestselling, Breathe Like a Bear, which is on our suggested book list for teachers enrolled in our 40-hour children’s yoga training.

This book is a practical guidebook to develop effective and more satisfying ways of communicating. Sofer—a nationally recognized teacher of meditation, mindfulness, and nonviolent communication—offers techniques to help: increase confidence in conversations, stay focused on what really matters, reduce anxiety before and during difficult conversations, and more. These practices combine mindfulness practices and the principles of nonviolent communication to help us have more meaningful and mindful conversations.
